Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians: No Other Gospel – Week Two: Jesus + Nothing
David Yarborough

As we delve into the Book of Galatians, we uncover a timeless truth that the Apostle Paul passionately defended: the Gospel of Jesus Christ is complete and perfect, needing no additions. This message is as relevant today as it was in Paul’s time, reminding us of the sufficiency of Christ’s work for our salvation.

Paul’s letter to the Galatians addresses a critical issue: the temptation to add human traditions and requirements to the Gospel. He uses a vivid analogy to illustrate this point. Imagine being served a perfectly cooked steak by a master chef, only to cover it with ketchup. This act would horrify the chef, as it ruins what was already perfect. Similarly, the Galatians were adding unnecessary elements to the Gospel, thinking it was not enough on its own.

The Gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age. It is not about human effort or additional rules; it is about grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. The Gospel is not a self-help strategy or a motivational message; it is a divine rescue mission. Jesus came to save us from the world systems, our sinful nature, and spiritual forces that seek to destroy us.

Throughout history, there have been attempts to enhance the Gospel with human traditions and works. Martin Luther, the great reformer, faced similar challenges in his time. He discovered the liberating truth in Galatians 2:16, that we are justified by faith in Jesus Christ, not by works of the law. This revelation sparked the Reformation, emphasizing that salvation is a gift from God, not something we earn.

Paul warns against turning to a different gospel, which is no gospel at all. The true Gospel is Jesus + nothing = Everything. It is not Jesus plus good works, church attendance, or moral achievements. It is simply Jesus. When we add anything to Jesus, we lose everything.

The power of the Gospel lies in the call of Christ. It is a call that transforms lives, bringing people from darkness to light, from death to life. It is not just an idea but a life-changing message that carries the authority and power of God.

As we reflect on this message, let us remember the moment we first heard the call of Christ. Are we standing firm in that call, growing closer to Jesus every day? Or have we allowed our hearts to grow dull to His voice?

If you have never fully embraced the Gospel, now is the time. Acknowledge your need for God’s grace, believe in Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection, and call upon Him to save you. The Gospel is not about what we do; it is about what Jesus has already done for us.

Let us hold fast to the true Gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, and live in the freedom and grace He offers.
