With Us: The Presence that Changes Everything – Week One: Here’s Your Sign
David Yarborough

As we enter the Advent season, a time of anticipation and preparation for the celebration of Christ’s birth, we are reminded of the profound truth encapsulated in the name “Emmanuel,” which means “God with us.” This truth, drawn from Isaiah 7:14, is not just a historical promise but a present reality that can transform our lives today.

The Promise of Emmanuel

In the midst of life’s challenges, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and alone. The story of King Ahaz in Isaiah 7 is a powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness. Faced with the threat of invasion, Ahaz was terrified, yet God sent the prophet Isaiah to reassure him with a promise: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Emmanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). This promise was not only for Ahaz but also pointed to the future coming of Christ, the ultimate fulfillment of God being with us.

God’s Presence in Our Present

The sermon beautifully illustrated how we often seek solutions in our own strength, much like Ahaz considered an alliance with Assyria. Yet, God invites us to trust Him, to seek His presence in our situations. The challenge is to recognize that our peace and joy should not be dependent on the resolution of our circumstances but on the reality of God’s presence with us.

Practical Steps to Embrace Emmanuel

  1. Reflect on Past Encounters with God: Take a moment to recall a time when you felt God’s presence in your life. It could be a moment of worship, a time of prayer, or an unexpected blessing. Allow those memories to remind you of His faithfulness.
  2. Seek God in Your Current Situation: Whatever stress or anxiety you may be facing, ask God, “Where are you in this situation?” Seek to align your heart with His presence and purpose, trusting that He is working even when you cannot see it.
  3. Use the Signs of the Season: As you see Christmas lights and trees and hear bells, let them be reminders of the light of Christ, the tree of the cross, and the proclamation of good news. These symbols can help keep your focus on the true meaning of the season.
  4. Trust in the Promise of Emmanuel: Remember that Jesus, our Savior, is with us. He is not only the one who saves but also the one who is ever-present. This Advent, let the truth of Emmanuel deepen your faith and expectation.

Conclusion

As we prepare for Christmas, let’s not just get caught up in the external preparations but also prepare our hearts to receive the fullness of God’s presence. Emmanuel, God with us, is not just a name but a promise that transforms our lives. May this season be a time of renewed faith and deeper awareness of God’s presence in every moment.

Prayer

Father, thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Help us to trust in your presence and to seek you in every situation. May we be reminded of your faithfulness and love as we celebrate this Advent season. Amen.
