All In: Building God’s Kingdom – Week 6: Fatal Disappointments
David Yarborough

Life is a journey filled with both adventure and battle. As Christians, we are called to embrace both aspects, understanding that they often occur simultaneously. A recent sermon on Nehemiah 6 highlighted this duality, offering valuable lessons on overcoming opposition in our spiritual walk.

Nehemiah’s mission to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls was met with fierce resistance. His enemies, Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem, sought to derail his efforts through distractions, accusations, and intimidation. Yet, Nehemiah’s unwavering commitment to God’s vision serves as a powerful example for us.

One of the key takeaways from the sermon is the importance of course correction. Just as a ship must adjust its course to reach its destination, we, too, must regularly realign our lives with God’s purposes. This requires discernment to recognize distractions, whether they come in the form of seemingly good opportunities or outright opposition.

Nehemiah’s response to his enemies was marked by wisdom and courage. He refused to be swayed by their tactics, declaring, “I’m doing a great work and I can’t come down.” This declaration is a call to all believers to remain focused on the mission God has given us despite the challenges we face.

The sermon also emphasized the role of fear in derailing our progress. Fear can lead us to compromise our values or abandon our vision. Nehemiah’s refusal to be intimidated by threats is a reminder that our trust must be in God, who is greater than any opposition we encounter.

In our own lives, we may face criticism, doubt, or fear as we pursue God’s calling. Yet, like Nehemiah, we can find strength in prayer and in the assurance that we are part of a “great work.” By keeping our eyes on God and His promises, we can overcome the battles we face and continue on the journey He has set before us.

As we reflect on Nehemiah’s story, let us be encouraged to stand firm in our faith, to resist the distractions and fears that seek to derail us, and to trust in God’s power to see us through every challenge. In doing so, we can fulfill the vision He has for our lives, bringing glory to His name.
